Introduction
The NACAA Early Career Development (ECD) Committee is one of the four committees under the Extension Development Council. The Council focuses on general Extension training since a common thread among NACAA members is the fact that we are all Extension agents/educators. Therefore it is imperative that NACAA continue to offer training in how to become a better Extension professional. The four committees were formed to focus on broad general Extension related areas. They include Public Relations and Agriculture Issues, Early Career Development, Administration Skill Development, and Teaching and Communications Skills.
The Early Career Development Committee is responsible for developing educational programs directed at NACAA members with five years or less tenure. Efforts are to develop programs, materials and partnerships with other NACAA committees to orient and assist Extension personnel early in their career. The current objectives and plan of work for the committee are listed below:
Goals and Objectives, 2005-2006
- Submit 2007 committee budget request to national board by September 1 st to support ECD program delivery and committee member expenses.
- Solicit input from new NACAA members, newer agents (<10 years), and ECD State Chairs on training needs and expectations of NACAA. Encourage early career agents to attend the ECD committee workshop.
- Develop means to encourage new and early career members to participate and continue involvement in state and national NACAA activities and the AM/PIC.
- Provide information on and increase understanding of professional and personal improvement opportunities through NACAA.
- Improve communications with new and early career members and the state chairman for Early Career Development.
Plan of Work for 2005 - 2006:
- Submit 2007 committee budget request to national board by September 1 st to support ECD program delivery and committee member expenses.
- Compile an accurate listing and develop an electronic list-serve to include 100 percent of the state association State Chair contacts for the Early Career Development committee by November 1, 2005
- Develop educational sessions for the 2006 AM/PIC related to early career development issues.
- Continue to update the Early Career Development web page to provide information on the committee activities, plan of work, available resources, including 2005 AM/PIC speaker presentations, handouts and articles relative to early career development.
- Establish a list serve through the NACAA for the exchange of ideas and information among early career development state chairs and national vice chairs.
- Work with state level Extension training and orientation personnel and ECD state chairs to communicate the benefits of NACAA to new agents. Survey state associations to determine what materials on NACAA organization structure (hierarchy and structure) are used to educate new members.
- Develop a time-line of activities and deadlines for the state Early Career Development Chairs. Send this information booklet to each state chair and post to ECD website.
- Conduct a follow-up analysis of the 2004 National Early Career Development Survey to determine if professional development differences exist between regions and years of service.
- Assist the HOST state for the AM/PIC in conducting the First Timers Orientation.
